While devices like NVIDIA Shield and the OUYA consoles are great examples of Android OEMs trying to think outside the box and offering up gaming console running on Android, let’s face it, they’re not exactly flying off the shelves which is why we have to wonder why ASUS is so eager to jump into the market with a similar offering of their own.
That being said, ASUS has yet to officially announce their own Android gaming console, although in the past AnTuTu benchmark sightings and leaked photos pretty much “confirms” the existence of the ASUS Game Box, but now thanks to a recent sighting on GFXBench, additional details about the ASUS Game Box has been revealed.
Now we’re not sure if the Game Box will be more like the OUYA or if it will be more like the NVIDIA Shield, which is more of a handheld console, but according to the specs, the Game Box appears to be connected to a 6.9-inch Full HD display. The device will also be powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra chipset clocked at 1.9GHz (quad-core) with 1.8GB of RAM and 5.6GB of storage.
It also appears to be running on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean which is a little disappointing since Android 4.4 KitKat has been out for a while now, but hopefully ASUS will update it before it is released. There’s no word on when ASUS will announce the Game Box or how much it will cost, but given that neither the NVIDIA Shield or OUYA are that popular (they’re good ideas, we admit), we’re not sure why ASUS thinks it’s a good idea to hop on board that bandwagon.
Perhaps ASUS has something that the competition doesn’t have, but whatever it is, we’ll be keeping our eyes and ears peeled for more information regarding a possible launch date, so stay tuned for more info!
